New physicians join City of Hope medical staff

City of Hope added 18 new physicians to its medical staff roster over autumn and winter. Here we profile eight of these specialists, who bring their expertise to six departments at City of Hope. We will profile the remaining 10 new physicians in our next issue.

New additions to City of Hope include these physicians:

  • Ahmed M. Aribi, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Hematology & Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation (HCT). Aribi joins City of Hope from the Division of Cancer Medicine’s Department of Leukemia at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), bone marrow transplantation program.

    Sanjay Awasthi, M.D., professor in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism and the Department of Medical Oncology & Therapeutics Research. Awasthi is also a laboratory scientist and principal investigator on two National Cancer Institute (NCI) grants focused on the intersection between cancer, diabetes and inflammation. He joins City of Hope from Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital, Texas Cancer Center and University of North Texas Health Sciences Center.
  • Traci Biondi, M.D., clinical assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology. She previously worked for Mesilla Valley Anesthesiology in Las Cruces, N.M., where she was an anesthesiologist and partner. She is trained in both pediatric and adult anesthesiology.

  • Joel B. Epstein, D.M.D., M.S.D., provides oral health services in the Division of Head and Neck Surgery. Epstein joined City of Hope from the University of Illinois’ College of Medicine where he was a professor of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery and led the Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences.
  • Alexander S. Jung, M.D., assistant clinical professor in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology. He comes to City of Hope from the Department of Radiology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC).

  • Peter P. Lee, M.D., professor in the Department of Hematology & HCT. Lee also has been appointed to the faculty of Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope, where he serves as associate chair of the Department of Cancer Immunotherapeutics and Tumor Immunology. He was previously at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Lee’s scientific studies include immunologic aspects of breast cancer, melanoma and hematologic malignancies. He holds several grants from the NCI and other funding agencies.

  • Nitya Nathwani, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Hematology & HCT. He completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology-oncology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He then completed a bone marrow transplantation fellowship at City of Hope before joining the faculty.

  • John J. Park, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and section chief of interventional radiology. Park comes to City of Hope from Keck School of Medicine of USC’s Department of Radiology where he was an assistant professor and assistant director of the department’s M.D./Ph.D. program.
