Cancer doesn't take a vacation

Michael A. Friedman, M.D. President and CEOMichael A. Friedman, M.D. President and CEO

In this issue of HopeCONNECTION I am very pleased to be able to introduce you to Dr. Robert Figlin, the new chair of the division of medical oncology and therapeutics research at City of Hope. A national leader in genitourinary and thoracic oncology, he is a powerful addition to City of Hope's already formidable team of researchers.

Thank you for making it possible for him to come to City of Hope.

Your faithful and generous partnership with City of Hope is the engine that drives our compassionate care for patients, our commitment to innovative research and our determination that research and care work hand in hand.

There is something else I want to thank you for: your understanding that cancer never rests.

You see, many charities and nonprofit organizations experience a "summer slump." During the warm months, children are out of school and families frequently travel or get involved with other activities. Understandably, supporting charities takes a back seat to important family projects, trips and commitments.

But cancer does not take a vacation. Children are still being diagnosed with leukemia, men with prostate cancer, women with breast cancer ...
And that means your generosity in June, July and August is just as important as it is in December and January.

On page four, you will see a wonderful story about the impact you had on children in City of Hope's pediatric cancer program. Because kind people like you chose to support City of Hope by sending a gift and signing a sheet of stickers, you brought encouragement and joy to some very sick children.

Thank you for being someone who not only cares about the fight against cancer, but who backs up that compassion with action. In our hospital and in our laboratories, lives are being saved because of your generosity.
