“I am pleased to bring friends and fellow car enthusiasts together to raise funds for prostate cancer research and treatment programs at City of Hope,” said Debbie Baker, founder and chair, Cruisin’ for a Cure. “Last year, approximately 100 men out of 1,160 screened were diagnosed with elevated levels of prostate specific antigen. This year, I’m committed to building greater awareness for prostate health and to encourage men to get a free screening at Cruisin’ for a Cure.”
When her husband, who lost his battle with prostate cancer last year, was diagnosed over 12 years ago, along with others she knew who were diagnosed, Baker decided to leverage her love for automobiles to help raise money and awareness for prostate cancer research. Last year, Baker received the prestigious Jefferson Award by KABC-TV Channel 7 in Los Angeles for her 10-year commitment to the fight against prostate cancer.
In 2010, more than 217,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the U.S. City of Hope maintains one of the largest prostate cancer programs in the country, with an emphasis on clinical, translational and laboratory research to improve understanding of the disease and develop new diagnostic tools and treatments. City of Hope surgeons have more experience performing robotic urologic procedures than any other medical institution in the nation. Since 2003, City of Hope has been performing prostatectomies using the da Vinci surgical system, which enables surgeons to perform a high-precision procedure with unparalleled surgical accuracy that can speed postoperative recovery and significantly reduce blood loss. Researchers also are using engineered antibodies that may light up prostate cancer tissue, helping surgeons completely remove tumors.
