13th annual Cruisin’ for a Cure drives prostate cancer awareness and support for City of Hope’s research and treatment programs, Sept. 22

COSTA MESA, Calif., September 10, 2012 — The world’s largest one-day charity car show will place on Sept. 22, 2012, at the 13th annual Cruisin’ for a Cure event. The event—featuring more than 3,400 specialty vehicles—will support prostate cancer research, treatment and education programs at City of Hope and all future shows. Free prostate cancer screenings also will be available on-site. The event takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Orange County Fair & Events Center.

Tickets are available at the door at $15 for adults with free admission for children 12 and under.

“We are thrilled to partner with City of Hope, which is well-known for its prostate cancer programs, for this 13th annual event,” said Debbie Baker, founder and chair, Cruisin’ for a Cure.  “In addition to a fun time, I hope many men take advantage of the free prostate cancer screening at the event,that can truly save the life of a loved one with a simple and FREE blood test and NO appointment is necessary”.

A variety of hot rods, colorful custom cars, tricked-out muscle cars, corvettes, classics, trucks and much more will be on display. Vehicles will cruise a 1.5-mile-long route through the fair grounds. Cruisin’ for a Cure also will feature live entertainment throughout the day with The Answer to Classic Rock & Roll, Casey Simpson singing country and 3 more bands all day,and more than 200 automotive vendors and exhibitors.

In 2012, more than 241,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the U.S. City of Hope, one of the world’s largest cancer treatment facilities, leads the way in treating this disease with advanced approaches and cutting-edge research. Since 2003, City of Hope has performed more than 5,000 robotically-assisted prostatectomies using the state-of-the-art da Vinci surgical system (which will be available at the show to see exactly how the machine works at the show), enabling surgeons to perform the procedure with unparalleled accuracy that can speed postoperative recovery and reduce risk of side effects. City of Hope is also a pioneer in using precision radiation therapy and innovative chemotherapy to target and treat the cancer while sparing nearby healthy cells.

As National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, City of Hope also conducts and participates in numerous clinical trials to better prevent, diagnose and treat prostate cancer. Current studies include finding better screening methods and identifying genetic risk factors for the disease, as well as improving quality-of-life for survivors and their loved ones.
