DUARTE, Calif., July 21, 2008 – Laura Kruper, M.D., a breast cancer surgeon and researcher, joins City of Hope as assistant professor in the Department of General Oncologic Surgery. Kruper specializes in the surgical treatment of breast cancers, and also conducts outcomes research, addressing issues ranging from surgical survival rates to quality of life for survivors. She joins City of Hope from the John Wayne Cancer Institute, where she completed a fellowship in breast cancer surgery.
“Dr. Kruper’s approach involves treating not only the tumor but preparing her patients for survivorship – a holistic approach that reflects the philosophy at City of Hope,” said Joshua D.I. Ellenhorn, M.D. director, Department of General Oncologic Surgery at City of Hope. “Through her outcomes research she will help translate scientific findings from laboratory research into clinical practice, which should benefit countless patients.”
Prior to John Wayne Cancer Institute, Kruper completed a surgical residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and an internship in general surgery at Yale University New Haven Hospital.
She is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and has made presentations before these and other organizations. She has been published in such journals as Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and in Annals of Surgery.
Kruper obtained her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine, where she graduated Alpha Omega Alpha (Honor Medical Society), and completed her general surgery training. During her residency, she completed a Master’s of Science degree in health services and outcomes research from the University of Pennsylvania, Center for Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics, which was funded by the National Cancer Institute. The focus of her master’s degree was outcomes research and her thesis was published in the journal, Cancer.
She earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Egyptology at Brown University in Rhode Island, and completed a post-baccalaureate premedical program at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania.
