LOS ANGELES, October 17, 2011 — Four leaders from the real estate industry will receive The Spirit of Life® Award, City of Hope’s most prestigious philanthropic honor at the institution’s 2011 Spirit of Life Award dinner on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011. The Spirit of Life Award is presented annually to a real estate industry leader(s) and recognizes outstanding business and philanthropic achievement. City of Hope’s 2011 Spirit of Life Award recipients are Public Storage chairman and chief executive officer Ronald L. Havner, Jr. and wife LeeAnn Havner, and Kilroy Realty Corporation’s president and chief executive officer John Kilroy, Jr. and wife Catherine Kilroy.
“We are delighted to have two such illustrious families being honored by City of Hope with The Spirit of Life Award,” said Richard Ziman, founding chairman of the Los Angeles Real Estate & Construction Industries Council at City of Hope. “In addition, we will memorialize Jeff Berger, a valued and beloved member of the council who lost his life in a plane crash last spring. Together, we will celebrate the promise of City of Hope’s critical research and the amazing efforts of these strong families.”
Ronald L. Havner Jr. has been the chief executive officer and a member of the board of Public Storage since 2002, president since 2005 and was named chairman in 2011. Havner joined Public Storage in 1986 and held a variety of senior management positions until his appointment as vice-chairman and chief executive officer in 2002. Havner has been chairman of Public Storage's affiliate, PS Business Parks Inc. since March 1998 and was chief executive officer of PSB from March 1998 until August 2003. He is also a member of the Board of Governors and the Executive Committee of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts Inc., serving as treasurer and a member of its Audit and Investment Committee. He is also a member of the NYU REIT Center Board of Advisors and a director of Business Machine Security Inc.
John Kilroy Jr., has served as the Kilroy Realty Corporation’s president, chief executive officer, and director since its incorporation in September 1996. Prior to joining the company, he served in the same capacity for Kilroy Industries and was responsible for the overall management of all facets since 1981. Kilroy has been involved in all aspects of commercial and industrial real estate development, construction, acquisition, sales leasing, financing and entitlement since 1967. Kilroy is a trustee of the El Segundo Employers Association, a past trustee of Viewpoint School, the Jefferson Center for Character Education and the National Fitness Foundation. He serves on the Policy Advisory Board for the Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, and the board of New Majority Los Angeles.
