1/18/2012 - City of Hope honors two home furnishings industry leaders with The Spirit of Life® Award

Two leaders from the home furnishings industry will receive The Spirit of Life® Award, City of Hope’s most prestigious philanthropic honor at the institution’s 2012 Spirit of Life Award dinner during the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, N.C., on Sunday, April 22, 2012.

1/17/2012 - Smita Bhatia, physician and researcher at City of Hope, elected to American Society for Clinical Oncology board of directors

Smita Bhatia, M.D., M.P.H., the Ruth Ziegler Chair in Population Sciences at City of Hope, has been elected to serve on the board of directors of the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Her four-year term will begin during ASCO’s annual meeting at Chicago in early June.

12/6/2011 - Bob Pittman, Clear Channel CEO and philanthropist, to receive top honor from City of Hope

Pittman will receive The Spirit of Life Award in May 2012 at a unique, music-infused gala in California with special musical guest and DJ performances. Proceeds will benefit City of Hope.

11/28/2011 - Childhood cancer survivors with specific genes are at higher risk of developing heart problems after treatment with anthracycline chemotherapy

The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, found that a specific variation of the CBR3 gene is linked to the development of cardiovascular complications. Investigators are conducting further research to develop tests and treatment guidelines that may reduce or mitigate this risk.

When seeking a physician, you should look for one with experience. Right? Maybe not. Research on physicians' decision-making processes has revealed that those who pay attention to failures as well as successes become more adept at selecting the correct treatment.

11/15/2011 - City of Hope researchers discover genetic markers that put lymphoma survivors at higher risk for secondary leukemia

A team of City of Hope researchers has discovered genetic markers that help identify which patients might be at risk, and are closer to understanding how physicians may prevent certain patients from developing this deadly secondary cancer. The study was published in the Nov. 15 edition of the journal Cancer Cell.

11/10/2011 - Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and City of Hope Researchers Receive NCI Program Project Grant to Investigate Neuroblastoma Tumor Microenvironment

A $2.5 million grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI)’s Tumor Microenvironment Network will enable cancer researchers from City of Hope and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to investigate drug resistance in neuroblastoma.

11/8/2011 - Nurses in California’s public hospitals to receive training in palliative care

A two-year, $535,000 grant from the California Health Care Foundation will enable City of Hope’s Division of Nursing Research and Education to deliver much-needed palliative care training to nurses working in California’s 16 public hospitals.

10/31/2011 - City of Hope conducts first-in-world clinical trial of T cell therapy for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Study is the first to use central memory T cells that could potentially provide lifelong immunity.

10/20/2011 - “An Evening with Lucie Arnaz”

The show will take place on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and celebrates the 35th anniversary of City of Hope’s pioneering transplant program, which recently performed its 10,000th transplant, a milestone only a few centers in the world have reached.
