LOS ANGELES, November 26, 2008 — On November 20, the National Insurance Industry Council for City of Hope presented Stephen W. Lilienthal, chairman and chief executive office of CNA, with the 2008 Spirit of Life® Award, City of Hope’s most prestigious honor, in recognition of his business achievements and philanthropic commitments. More than 300 industry executives attended the Spirit of Life gala, held at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers, which raised nearly $475,000.
During his career at CNA, Lilienthal refocused the company’s core strength in commercial insurance, reunderwrote its book of business, strengthened its financial base, rebuilt its operating platform, and focused on a set of core values – integrity, diversity, financial focus, customer focus, professionalism and teamwork.
“This award shows that City of Hope and the insurance industry can successfully work together to improve the lives of patients while collaboratively supporting cancer research, education and treatment,” said Lilienthal. “I’m honored to have the opportunity to work with an institution that is working to quickly bring new and improved treatments to patients with life-threatening diseases.”
“Stephen’s passion for cancer research, education and treatment has contributed greatly to City of Hope’s mission,” said Michael Sandler, director of development, City of Hope. “Through his leadership and CNA’s support, City of Hope continues to improve the lives of patients who face life-threatening diseases.”
The National Insurance Industry Council is an association of key industry executives and is comprised of the most prominent property and casualty companies in the insurance industry.
