NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center
In recognition of our broad-based innovations in cancer research and treatment, our continuing commitment to compassionate patient care, and our initiatives in patient and community education, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has designated City of Hope a Comprehensive Cancer Center — the highest level of recognition bestowed by the NCI. City of Hope is one of just a handful of elite institutions nationwide to receive this prestigious honor.

Comprehensive Cancer Center Research Programs
City of Hope's Comprehensive Cancer Center provides a multidisciplinary, interactive environment, with basic, clinical and translational, and prevention and control scientists working closely together. The opportunities afforded for translational research in this stimulating intellectual environment contribute to the exciting and productive research under way within the Cancer Center.

Cancer Control and Population Sciences
The mission of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences (CCPS) Program is to advance the study of cancer development, improve cancer prevention and outcomes, and reduce the burden of cancer and its sequelae across all segments of the population through multidisciplinary collaboration in the areas of clinical service, research and education. 
 
Cancer Immunotherapeutics
The Cancer Immunotherapeutics (CI) Program is focused on discovery and application to clinical practice of efficacious and minimally toxic immunotherapeutic interventions for cancer.

Developmental Cancer Therapeutics
The long-term goal of the Developmental Cancer Therapeutics (DCT) Program is to develop more effective and less toxic treatments for cancer.
 
Hematologic Malignancies
The long-term goal of the Hematologic Malignancies (HM) Program is to improve outcomes for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and multiple myeloma. 

Molecular Oncology Program
The overall scientific vision of the Molecular Oncology Program (MONC) is to investigate fundamental DNA and RNA biology for the purpose of understanding basic mechanisms of cancer and ultimately identifying potential new therapeutic approaches

Beckman Research Institute Departments/Divisions
Research at City of Hope is conducted within eight basic science departments of Beckman Research Institute along with nine clinical research divisions.

Every four years, City of Hope publishes a comprehensive research report that presents overviews of ongoing research studies, future ambitions and more. The City of Hope Research Report is also available by mail, please contact media relations for more information.

Biology
The Division of Biology focuses on understanding the basic biological processes of genetics, gene expression and function, epigenetic mechanisms and DNA repair systems.

Cancer Biology
The Department of Cancer Biology offers a multidisciplinary research and training environment in tumor cell biology, radiation biology, molecular biology, genetics, epigenetics and developmental biology.

Cancer Immunotherapeutics & Tumor Immunology

Dedicated to discovering immune-based cancer therapies, the Department of Cancer Immunotherapeutics & Tumor Immunology conducts research in a new and evolving field and is known particularly for its studies using genetically engineered T cells.

Clinical and Molecular Pharmacology
The Division of Clinical and Molecular Pharmacology focuses on laboratory-based research into the mechanisms of action and resistance of anticancer agents and investigates the effectiveness of cancer therapeutic agents in order to develop novel molecular-targeted cancer therapies.

Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases Research
This department focuses on understanding the genetic and molecular bases of diabetes, developing novel treatment approaches for diabetes and preventing associated diseases such as cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Gene Regulation and Drug Discovery
This division integrates approaches in gene regulation, chemistry and emerging molecular technologies toward the study and development of drugs for the treatment of atherosclerosis, obesity, diabetes, cancer and related disorders.

Hematopoietic Stem Cell and Leukemia Research
In order to develop cures for leukemia and other hematologic malignancies, this division’s goal is to improve the understanding of leukemia stem cells.

Immunology
With a dual focus on immunology and structural biology, the Department of Immunology explores cancer immunology and biochemistry, antigen processing and T cell development.

Molecular and Cellular Biology
Maintaining a strong emphasis on the interface of chemistry and biology, the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology focuses on gene structure, modeling of antibodies, theoretical biology and more.

Molecular Medicine
Established in 1996, the Department of Molecular Medicine seeks to understand basic mechanisms underlying cancer and other diseases for the purpose of developing novel molecular therapeutics.

Neurosciences
The Department of Neurosciences focuses on a range of research related to the brain and nervous system, including studies of molecular neurobiology/neurochemistry, neurophysiology, neuromorphology and molecular genetics.

Radiation Biology
The Division of Radiation Biology studies the fundamental mechanisms of cancers and radiation resistance in cancer cells to find a solution to improve the efficacy of radiation therapy.

Tumor Cell Biology 
The Division of Tumor Cell Biology develops novel translational cancer research in the areas of tumor biology, bioinformatics, and cancer prevention and diagnosis.

Virology

From the research of lentivirus vectors to the development of experimental therapies using gene transfer vectors, the Department of Virology supports eight individual laboratories, including one dedicated to exploring new treatments for HIV/AIDS.
