 Biography

Joshua Ellenhorn, M.D., is one of City of Hope’s leading experts in general surgical oncology, specializing in surgical treatments for cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. He is the Chief of the Division of General & Oncologic Surgery at City of Hope. He is also a leading educator, serving as director for City of Hope’s Surgical Oncology Fellowship Training Program, as well as holding a position as assistant clinical professor of Surgery at the University of California, San Diego.

Prior to his arrival at City of Hope in 1993, he completed his residency at the University of Cincinnati Hospital, and performed fellowship training for two years in immunology at the University of Chicago, and in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center for two years. He received his medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine.

In addition to this clinical and educational work, Dr. Ellenhorn also contributes to the basic scientific research programs at City of Hope. Currently, his laboratory is working to develop and evaluate new cancer vaccines that target a number of cancer associated proteins including p53, which is present in abundance in a large proportion of breast cancer cells. This research, which has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is leading to the development of a vaccine to eliminate tumors in patients with cancer.

Dr. Ellenhorn has received numerous citations for his work, including fellowship awards from the NIH and from the American Cancer Society. He has published more than 60 book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals, and delivered dozens of presentations and abstracts at medical conferences worldwide.
