 Takahiro Maeda, M.D., Ph.D.

  • Assistant Professor, Stem Cell and Leukemia Research
  • Full Member, Hematologic Malignancies Program, Comprehensive Cancer Center

Maeda’s interests are in investigating mechanisms underlying leukemogenesis and lymphomagenesis (development of leukemia and lymphoma) using mouse models, with a keenly translational focus. Leukemia stem cells may arise from normal stem cells affected by expression of certain oncogenes. Therefore, understanding oncogenes and proto-oncogenes is critical to understanding leukemogenesis. Maeda evaluated the POK transcription factor LRF/Pokemon, and established and analyzed both conventional and conditional LRF knockout mutants. He has shown LRF acts as a proto-oncogene by repressing the tumor suppressor Arf. Data from clinical specimens indicate LRF is highly expressed in human cancers, including B cell lymphoma, and expression is associated with clinical outcome. Maeda will further evaluate LRF as a target for cancer therapy.
