 Marcia M. Miller, Ph.D.

  • Associate Chair and Professor , Molecular and Cellular Biology
  • Director, Electron Microscopy Core Facility

Marcia M. Miller, Ph.D., directs the City of Hope Electron Microscopy Core Facility, a core used by many investigators at City of Hope. Miller teaches electron microscopy, helps with the design of experiments and assists with the interpretation of results. She actively pursues the introduction of new technologies into the electron microscopy core in order to provide better means for defining cellular ultrastructure that underlie diverse molecular and cellular interactions under investigation at City of Hope. Increasingly, projects supported by the electron microscopy core focus on goals in translational medicine and stem cell biology.

In addition to Miller's responsibilities in the electron microscopy core, she conducts her own basic research focused on defining genetic elements underlying heritable differences in responses to cancers and infection. Miller defined a single gene, BG1, as a major contributor to the long observed linkage between major histocompatibility complex genotype and the incidence of GaHV-2-induced lymphoma in the chicken model.

Miller received her undergraduate and graduate training from the University of California at Davis and UCLA. Before coming to City of Hope, Miller completed post-doctoral training at the California Institute of Technology under the tutelage of Jean-Paul Revel, Ph.D., and Ray Owen, Ph.D.

Originally a botanist, Miller pursued cell biology and immunology training in Switzerland, first as an international research fellow with the Max M. Burger laboratory in the Biozentrum at the University of Basel, and later as a visitor to the Basel Institute for Immunology in the Richard Pink group. Her extensive research into the basis of genetic resistance to GaHV-2 tumors has provided her with a broad experience in molecular biology; a valuable asset in assisting with many projects brought to the electron microscopy core.
