 Biography

Melanie. R. Palomares, M.D., M.S., is Assistant Professor of Medical Oncology and Population Sciences, and serves as a Staff Physician in the City of Hope Cancer Screening & Prevention Program.

Dr. Palomares earned her bachelor degree in mathematics at Boston University, and doctorate in medicine at Emory University. She did an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, followed by fellowships in Hematology at Harbor-UCLA, and Medical Oncology and Clinical Cancer Genetics at University of Washington.

In addition to being board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology, Dr. Palomares has a masters degree in Epidemiology, pursued during a postdoctoral fellowship in the Cancer Prevention Research Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. This unique multidisciplinary training has led to her specialization in the care of both patients who are at increased risk for cancer (primary cancer prevention and screening) and cancer survivors (secondary cancer prevention and surveillance). Her research focus is in breast cancer prevention and early detection, and she has particular expertise breast cancer chemoprevention trials, including trials using natural products.

Dr. Palomares is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists (ASCO), the American Society of Preventive Oncology (ASPO), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), and the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG). She is an active member in the SWOG Cancer Control Research Committee, Committee on Special Populations, and Breast Committee.
