 Goals of the Lab

The laboratory’s main goal is to enhance our understanding of the mechanisms and causes of human cancer. We are investigating the biological effects of solar UV radiation, cigarette smoke carcinogens and other mutagens as possible cancer-initiating agents. One major current direction of the lab is to analyze the molecular pathways that are involved in the formation of epigenetic changes (for example DNA methylation and chromatin modification events) in human cancer. We try to understand how these epigenetic changes that initially occur in the genome of normal cells eventually lead to malignancy. Methods are developed to analyze modified cytosine bases in mammalian genomes and to understand their biological significance.
