Biography

Rose Virani is a Senior Research Specialist in the Division of Nursing Research and Education at City of Hope in Duarte, Calif. She has been in oncology nursing for over 35 years.

Having received her Associates Degree in nursing from Pasadena City College, she went on to receive her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from California State College and University Consortium in Dominguez Hills, Calif. She received her Masters in Health Administration from the University of LaVerne in LaVerne, Calif.

Ms. Virani has served as Project Director of three national end of life nursing education projects.  From 1996-1997 she directed the project "HOPE: Home care Outreach for Palliative Care Education," funded by the Project on Death in America. From 1997-2000 she served as Project Director of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) project titled "Strengthening Nursing Education in End-of-Life Care."  She was Project Director of the RWJF supported "End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC)" conducted from 2000-2003.

She is presently Project Director of several ELNEC projects:  ELNEC-Core, ELNEC-Critical Care, ELNEC-Geriatrics, ELNEC-International, and ELNEC-Pediatric Palliative Care.

In 2003 Ms. Virani received the California “NurseWeek” Nursing Excellence Award in the category of “Teaching” and in 2006 received the “Excellence in Supportive Care” and “Mary Nowotny Excellence in Cancer Nursing Education” Oncology Nursing Society awards. In 2009, Ms. Virani received the ONS Pearl Moore "Making a Difference" award and was inducted as a Fellow of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association. She is coauthor for over 30 publications (article and book chapters) and serves on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Cancer Pain Initiative.
