Defu Zeng, M.D., associate professor, is an established scientist in the field of immune tolerance and joined the Department of Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases Research at City of Hope to apply his expertise in immunology to the fields of diabetes and islet transplantation. Dr. Zeng works closely with the islet transplantation and bone marrow transplantation teams at City of Hope to develop new strategies for inducing immune tolerance of transplanted islets via the establishment of mixed chimerism (coexistence of donor and recipient cells), using bone marrow stem cells and regulatory T-cells. Dr. Zeng also plans to expand his research to develop new immune therapy approaches to prevent type 1 diabetes.
