This course exposes students to different aspects of malignant hematology including fundamentals of the diagnosis of leukemia and lymphoma. In addition, students become familiar with a variety of chemotherapeutic agents, with an emphasis on their side effects and clinical management of complications.
The clerkship focuses strongly on bone marrow transplantation including evaluation of new patients for transplantation. Students learn the fundamentals of HLA typing for donor selection and rotate through the HLA lab. Students also learn about methods of stem cell procurement. They will have the opportunity to observe bone marrow harvests and to rotate through the apheresis center and stem cell cryopreservation laboratory. Students are assigned preceptors on weekly rotation. They round daily with their preceptors and participate in outpatient clinics. Weekly medicine grand rounds, leukemia conferences, lymphoma conferences, fellows teaching conferences, new patient conferences and hematology research conferences enhance the clinical and basic science experience. Clerkship participants are evaluated by their preceptors at the conclusion of the rotation.
