 PGY1 Application Process

The process for application to City of Hope’s Pharmacy Residency Program consists of a number of steps. Please ensure that you have met all requirements and assembled the necessary materials. All application materials must be received by January 10 of each year.

A complete application consists of:

  • Curriculum vitae (Upload electronic copy via online application)
  • Statement of Intent (Completed as part of online application)
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation (A link will be submitted to the email address provided via online application. The recommender will be able to upload a letter and/or use the recommendation form attached to the link.)
  • Official transcript from ACPE accredited school of pharmacy. Mail to:

Resident Qualifications

  • The candidate must be a graduate of an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy.
  • The candidate must be licensed as a pharmacist in the state of California by September 1.
  • The candidate should possess a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.
  • The candidate should be comfortable and competent in clinical situations.

Selection Process
Criteria for selection to the City of Hope Pharmacy Practice Residency Program include:

  1. Academic record
    Each residency candidate should possess a GPA of at least 3.0 and will be given the opportunity during the interview to address any significant findings in the academic record. Each residency candidate is asked to submit a copy of their pharmacy school transcript.  All members of the Resident Selection Committee review this document.
  2. Letters of reference
    Each residency candidate is asked to submit three letters of reference as part of his or her application. All members of the Resident Selection Committee review these documents.
  3. Resident’s Statement of Intent
    Each residency candidate is asked to submit a personal statement of intent for the City of Hope Pharmacy Practice Residency Program. All members of the Resident Selection Committee review this document.
  4. Performance during interview
    Each residency candidate who has passed the other selection requirements is granted an interview, where he/she is asked a series of questions. Each response is rated on verbal communication skills, poise and personal presentation, leadership abilities, professional competence, and degree of match between the resident’s needs and that of the program.

Resident Selection Committee
As described in the Application Process section, the Resident Selection Committee is responsible for interviewing and reviewing application materials of each residency candidate. This committee consists of selected preceptors, members of the residency management team and current residents.

Following the review of interview results and all documents in the application process, each member of the Resident Selection Committee ranks each candidate. The committee reviews the final results and ranks the individual candidates for the National Matching Program.
