Career counseling is an interactive process where a student works with a career counselor to define themselves and take steps toward finding a fulfilling career. Typically, the career counseling process begins with understanding a student’s interests and background and how they relate to possible career choices. It then proceeds to preparing the student for a job search with a proper résumé and interview skills, and finally to negotiating a job offer. The Career counselor provides support and encouragement as students make decisions about their professional lives.
Many graduate students and postdocs, having lived in the academic world for a good number of years, are quite comfortable there. However, making the transition from student to professional scientist can at times feel daunting. That’s why we encourage City of Hope graduate students to meet with our career counselor. She can help students discover and refine their career interests and set defined goals along the path to achieving their ideal position. Our career counselor can also help students with their résumés/CVs and can give them insight into the job interview process.
