has been in oncology nursing for 35 years and has focused her clinical expertise and research in pain management, quality of life and palliative care. Ferrell is a professor and research scientist at City of Hope in Los Angeles. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and she has over 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals and texts. She is principal investigator of a Program Project funded by the National Cancer Institute on “Palliative Care for Quality of Life and Symptom Concerns in Lung Cancer” and principal investigator of the “End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium” project. She directs several other funded projects related to palliative care in cancer centers and quality-of-life issues. Ferrell is a member of the board of scientific advisors of the National Cancer Institute and is chairperson of the National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care. She is also the chairperson of the Southern California Cancer Pain Initiative. She has authored eight books, including “Cancer Pain Management” (1995), a text on “Suffering” (1995), “Pain in the Elderly” (1996) and “Oxford Textbook of Palliative Nursing,” published by Oxford University Press (3rd edition published in 2010). She is co-author of the text, “The Nature of Suffering and the Goals of Nursing,” published in 2008 by Oxford University Press and “Making Health Care Whole: Integrating Spirituality into Patient Care” (Templeton Press, 2010). Ferrell completed a master’s degree in theology, ethics and culture from Claremont Graduate University in 2007.

is a licensed clinical social worker and Senior Research Specialist in Nursing Research and Education at the City of Hope in Duarte, California. Her clinical work, research, presentations and publications focus on transdisciplinary palliative care and integrated symptom management with a special emphasis on underserved populations. Shirley is the Principal Investigator of two National Cancer Institute-funded grants (the ACE Project and ExCEL in Social Work), and developed the nationally recognized Promoting Excellence in Pain Management and Palliative Care for Social Workers course. She received a Social Work Leadership Award from the Project on Death in America and is a Mayday Pain and Society Fellow. She is on the editorial board of the Journal of Palliative Medicine and is a Distinguished Social Work Practitioner in the National Academies of Practice. Shirley and Terry Altilio, are co-editors of the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Social Work, (2011). Shirley received her Master of Social Work Degree from the University of Hawaii and is currently enrolled in a doctoral program in palliative care at Lancaster University in Great Britain.

is an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist and Senior Research Specialist in the Division of Nursing Research and Education at City of Hope in Duarte, CA. She is the Project Director for the NCI funded Program Project Grant, Palliative Care for Quality of Life and Symptom Concerns in Lung Cancer (2009 – 2014, Betty Ferrell, PI). This project supports a program of interdisciplinary research with central themes related to palliative care, quality of life (QOL), and symptom management across the trajectory of lung cancer for both patients and family caregivers. She also serves as part of the Convening Center team for the Archstone Foundation funded Demonstration Projects for Improving the Quality of Spiritual Care. Borneman received her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing as well as her Masters in Nursing from Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, CA. She has worked for Dr. Betty Ferrell since 1994 and was the Project Director for an NCI funded study Reducing Barriers to Pain and Fatigue Management (2005-2010). From 2005-2008, Borneman was Project Director for the City of Hope funded Quality of Life and Symptom Concerns in Lung Cancer. She was also the Project Director for the ACS funded grant Decisions and Outcomes of Palliative Surgery, and worked on other studies involving pain education, palliative care, and end of life care. Borneman has authored/coauthored over 50 publications (articles and book chapters), chaired the palliative care team for the DC Cancer Coalition in Washington, DC, served as editor of the HPNA Core Curriculum for LPN/LVN Hospice and Palliative Nurses, and is a reviewer for several peer reviewed journals.

Andrea received her BA in Spanish Literature and Language from Cal State Long Beach, CA and worked to Barcelona, Spain as a professional education teacher. She is now pursing her MBA at University of LaVerne.
