 About City of Hope

Saving lives worldwideCity of Hope is a new model of cancer center. We combine basic research, clinical investigations and compassionate care to pursue one vital mission: save lives worldwide.

Ranked as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” in cancer and urology by U.S.News & World Report, City of Hope is an internationally recognized biomedical research, treatment and education center. We are one of only 40 Comprehensive Cancer Centers designated by the National Cancer Institute.

In the quest for cures, City of Hope leads the way.

Research - Science made swiftOur distinguished researchers have already transformed the practice of medicine.

Four of the most widely used cancer drugs are based on technology pioneered by City of Hope. Synthetic human insulin, used worldwide by millions with type 1 diabetes to manage the illness, also was developed through research at City of Hope.

Building on this rich legacy, City of Hope strives to speed scientific discoveries on the path to new, better treatments.

Our scientists harness the body’s natural defenses to seek and destroy brain tumors. They work to perfect a transplant procedure that could reverse type 1 diabetes. They develop new medicines that target cancer on the molecular level to reduce side effects. And they advance gene therapy that may provide resistance to HIV/AIDS.

We pursue our research goals with a special urgency, because patients facing serious disease need better treatments — now.

Treatment - Leading-edge care with heartPhoto of nurse and young patientSince its start almost a century ago, City of Hope has provided patient care with something extra: a commitment to compassion.

That commitment continues today. Our caregivers focus both on saving life and preserving quality of life.

City of Hope’s state-of-the-art medicine supports our compassion for patients’ suffering. We are a national leader in robotic and laparoscopic surgery for prostate cancer. These gentler procedures minimize side effects and get patients back on their feet faster.

We helped pioneer bone marrow transplantation — a potentially lifesaving procedure for patients with serious blood diseases. Today, our program is one of the largest and most successful of its kind in the world.

We treat more than 17,000 patients each year. Last year, City of Hope conducted more than 300 studies enrolling more than 5,000 patients. At City of Hope, patients facing the toughest diseases have the chance to benefit from the newest treatments available and contribute to the progress of medicine.

For thousands, a second chance at life starts at City of Hope.

Education - The foundation for future curesCPhoto of medical grad studentsity of Hope is preparing the next generation of scientists in search of cures.

At our accredited Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences of City of Hope, young scholars work side-by-side with renowned faculty members. Students explore the frontiers of science — some publishing award-winning research before they have diplomas in hand. As they move on to work at major universities and research institutions, our students expand the reach of City of Hope’s impact in the fight against life-threatening disease.

But education at City of Hope means more than just nurturing these brilliant young minds. We also produce seminars and public events that bring the latest medical information to patients, medical professionals and members of the community.

The minds of City of Hope share knowledge and shape the future of science.
