Practice Makes Perfect Philanthropy
Herb Stark knows the only way to improve one’s golf game is to practice. He has applied that same methodical discipline to his philanthropic endeavors. Since 2002, Stark has consistently supported City of Hope, with gifts totaling more than $160,000. Stark, who is into his 90s, first became involved with City of Hope in 1995, when he joined the Ocean Hills Chapter in Oceanside, Calif.

Camaraderie first drew Stark to his chapter, and his close friendship with fellow member Betty Steinman solidified his support for City of Hope. Steinman’s accounts of the compassionate care she received as a patient at City of Hope strongly influenced him. His first donation to the organization, a gift annuity, also provided financial rewards for him. “I earn a good return and it’s good for City of Hope,” said Stark. The arrangement proved so positive that Stark later created eight more charitable annuities.
He retired in 1985 after working for several decades in the women’s apparel industry. Originally from New York City, Stark relocated to Los Angeles in 1937, when he served in the United States Army Air Corps. The twice-widowed Stark now is an avid golfer who still presides over a weekly tournament. He jokingly describes his golfing dream in one sentence: “My goal is to be able to shoot my age.”
Just as he strives to improve his golf score, he has steadfastly committed his resources to advancing science. “I plan on leaving my house to City of Hope,” the devoted supporter added. Whether or not he improves his golf game, Stark’s legacy of giving will be long remembered.
