About the Division

Division of Medical Oncology and Therapeutics Research

The Division of Medical Oncology & Therapeutics Research consists of three departments:

  • The Department of Medical Oncology and Therapeutics Research focuses on clinical and translational research for the treatment of solid tumor malignancies

  • The Department of Clinical Cancer Genetics focuses on clinical and translational research for the prevention of solid tumor malignancies that result from inherited predisposition.

  • The Department of Clinical and Molecular Pharmacology focuses on the laboratory-based research into the mechanisms of action and resistance of anticancer agents.

The Division of Medical Oncology and Therapeutics Research focuses on the treatment and prevention of solid tumor malignancies. Major clinical research programs include breast, lung, gastrointestinal tract, prostate cancers, as well as gynecologic malignancies, sarcomas, melanoma, and testicular cancers. The Division fully participates in national cooperative group clinical trials including the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), and Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG).

Translational research programs focus upon development of novel therapeutic agents for all histologic types of cancer. There is NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center sponsorship of investigator-initiative trials of these novel agents. The Division was instrumental in forming and leading the California Cancer Consortium (a NCI Cancer Treatment and Evaluation Program-sponsored group) to develop novel phase I and II anticancer agents. Laboratory-based investigations are examining at the molecular level the mechanisms of action and resistance of anticancer agents, including both novel and traditional chemotherapeutic drugs, immunotherapeutics and combinations of anticancer agents and antibodies. Members of the Division are also involved in the teaching of fellows within our highly competitive subspecialty medical oncology fellowship program.
