Bill Story Award

Bill Story was a longtime member of the California Insurance Council before his life ended tragically in July 1996 as he headed to Paris on TWA Flight 800 for a business meeting. William R. Story was a man who believed that if you achieve certain successes in life, you should give back and share with others. This, according to him, was what being a good person was all about.

As chief executive officer of the National American Insurance Company of California, Story used his success to help others. He often could be found leading a group of insurance executives on a tour of City of Hope, pointing out the buildings and talking about why he believed in the organization’s work. For more than a decade, Story was instrumental in building City of Hope’s California Insurance Council into a philanthropic force that has raised more than $24 million to bring hope to children and adults facing cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes and other life-threatening illnesses. His work with the California Insurance Council and the legacy he left behind continues to have a positive impact on the lives of millions of children and adults around the world.

In Story’s memory, the California Insurance Council developed the William R. Story Memorial Award. This award recognizes a member of the insurance council who exemplifies the qualities and professionalism that Story espoused. Join us in recognizing and congratulating your 2014 William R. Story Memorial Award Honoree, our colleague and friend, Patrick Mitchell of Builders Insurance Group. The incredible work he has done as President of the Southeast Regional Committee and Campaign Chair of the Strike Out Cancer bowling tournament, in addition to his long-time dedication to City of Hope as a whole, really sets this man apart.

Top level sponsors will have the opportunity to join us for a private reception wherein the
2015 Bill Story Award will recipient will be announced and honored for his/her professionalism within the Insurance Industry.

Michael D. Miller is the President and Chief Operating Officer for the Scottsdale Insurance Group. Over the course of his 40-year career in the insurance industry, Mike has worked in various leadership capacities. As President of Scottsdale Insurance, Mike has what he believes is the best job in the E&S industry. The company benefits from talented associates, tenured customers, industry leadership, ongoing profitability and growth, and the strong support of parent company Nationwide.

For the past 30 years, Mike has played an integral role in the Nationwide Insurance organization. He joined Nationwide in 1985 as the Manager of Corporate Accounting.
