In 1950, U.N. ambassador and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited City of Hope. She later wrote about her visit, “It certainly is a city of hope and deserves the support it gets from labor and other individuals and organizations throughout the country.”
Roosevelt, pictured at right, was an advocate of civil rights and a well-known volunteer for the Red Cross before and after she lived in the White House as First Lady.
