 Safety and Security

Safety
City of Hope is committed to caring for you in a secure and healthful environment. At the center of our safety plan are patients and their families. We encourage you to ask questions, tell us if you see something that makes you uncomfortable, or suggest ways for us to improve.

Emergency Response
Press ext. 55 for any emergency 24 hours a day.

Fire and Safety Exits
Our fire safety systems, including smoke alarms, sprinkler systems and exit signs, meet all requirements mandated by law. Evacuation maps are posted by stairways and elevators to help you find the nearest exits from the building.

Security
Our Security Department is staffed 24 hours a day to offer assistance. Simply call ext. 62006 and someone will come immediately. For child safety, please make sure all staff involved in the care of your child have City of Hope photo identification badges.

For the safety and welfare of patients, visitors and employees, we have a policy of “zero tolerance” for any threats or acts of physical violence.

Valuables or Lost Items
While patient property can be secured by our Security Department, we strongly encourage you to leave cash and valuables at home. If you require assistance with a valuable item or wish to report lost or found property, please contact the Security Department at ext. 62006.

Personal Vehicles
Never leave valuables visible in your vehicle, and remember to lock your car. For your convenience, you may park in the Patient/Visitor Lot located directly in front of the Medical Center. Please be sure to observe parking regulations by not parking in the identified red (fire lane) or green (temporary vendor/City of Hope utility vehicles) zones or any other restricted areas.

If you are admitted to the hospital for an extended stay, please notify Admitting, which will notify Security, of the year, make, model and license number of your vehicle.

Suspicious Persons
Report suspicious individuals, activities or other security concerns to Security at ext. 62006.

Your Role in Safe Patient Care
You are a partner in your care. If you have a question or concern about anything, please speak up. Ask your doctor, nurse or anyone caring for you to explain what they are doing and why they are doing it. Some general tips to promote safe care include:

  • Always show your patient identification band to anyone who is providing care to you
  • Remind staff and visitors to clean their hands before touching you
  • Make sure anyone caring for you is wearing a City of Hope identification badge that you can read
  • If you are unsteady, please call someone for help before getting up by yourself
  • If you are allergic to anything, be sure to tell our staff and make sure your identification band lists these allergies
  • Ask about medications and treatments so you know what they are for
  • Always feel free to ask questions

More information is available in the City of Hope booklet, Be A Partner in Safe Patient Care. If you did not receive a copy of that booklet or would like another, you can obtain a copy by asking your nurse or by calling our Department of Patient, Family and Community Education at ext. 62682.
