Our new laboratories feature an innovative modular design that optimizes flexibility and efficiency. They can quickly and easily be reconfigured to meet the needs of different kinds of scientists — enabling us to make fast and cost-efficient adaptations as needed. Further, to maximize bench space in individual labs, many resources are centrally located in a shared technology suite.
First Floor: Hope on the Horizon
The first floor of the Gonda Center Expansion will house a number of projects furthering City of Hope’s international leadership in islet cell transplantation. Scientists in one of the floor’s laboratory are developing methods to assess the quality of cells prior to transplantation. Another project will focus on isolating and tracking islet cells. This research may help the insulin-producing cells function better and last longer.

Second Floor: Tiny targets, great potential
City of Hope scientists are delving into the very molecular roots of disease. Investigators with laboratories on the second floor of the Gonda Center Expansion will develop knowledge, cells, and drugs that will help treatment of diabetes and other metabolic disease. Proteins that control the action of genes have become a particularly promising area of focus.

Greener scientific space
City of Hope’s core value of compassion also includes being environmentally responsible. Designed to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, the Gonda Center Expansion will be an eco-friendly addition to our campus.
Green features include:
- A roof that reflects the sun’s rays, reducing the need for air conditioning.
- Solar panels
- Recycled construction materials.
- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning provided by energy-efficient equipment.
