Patient-centered Research

At City of Hope, research excellence comes from knowing how to ask the right questions to finding the best answers. To do that requires collaboration, out-of-the-box creativity and a passion for pursuing new ideas.

Here, multi-disciplinary teams of basic, clinical and population science investigators partner on ways to better treat, diagnose and prevent cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases, as well uncover the science behind them.

From our exhaustive survivorship studies, outcomes research and outreach to under-served and under-examined ethnic communities, to our ambitious use of clinical trials, we continually seek new and smarter ways to advance science for the health of people everywhere.

Phase I Clinical Trials Program

City of Hope investigates new and experimental cancer medicines, novel treatment combinations and other therapeutic methods through its Phase I Clinical Trials Program. The program offers patients access to some of the most advanced treatments in their earliest stages of development.

City of Hope conducts clinical trials of therapies that target specific disease sites such as the brain, prostate or pancreas, as well as studies that seek to determine how the body processes new drugs or therapy combinations. Other trials investigate treatments that address the needs of patients with organ dysfunctions such as impaired kidney or liver function, that normally would keep them from qualifying for many trials.

The City of Hope teams have extensive experience with phase I trials, including several first-in-human studies of new drugs and treatment technologies. And an increasing proportion of studies are initiated by the institution’s own scientists, who bring work directly from laboratory studies into the clinic.

Although driven to find new and improved therapies, their focus remains on the patients. The Phase I Clinical Trials Program often offers options to patients who have few choices, giving them a ray of hope and a chance to contribute to improving treatments for future patients in a compassionate and safe environment of care.

Islet Cell Transplantation

In recognition of its leadership role in treating diabetes, City of Hope is one of only 10 federally funded islet cell resource centers responsible for processing and distributing islet cells to transplant programs around the country.
