 Meet the Team

The City of Hope Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) team brings a wide array of experiences from both academia and industry in life sciences. Each team member’s unique experience and background complement each other to create a well-rounded team. Our team is here to serve our inventors and to assist in the advancement of their research and inventions. Feel free to contact any of us if you have any questions about the OTL.

A. George Megaw, Ph.D.

George Megaw joined the OTL as the associate director in June 2010 and was promoted to director of OTL in November 2010. He helps to manage OTL’s core functions, the identification, protection and commercialization of City of Hope’s intellectual property as well as City of Hope’s research partnerships with industry. Megaw has responsibility for intellectual property  licenses, agreements for corporate sponsored research on basic and translational research, and agreements with external partners who seek to access City of Hope's state-of-the-art 20,000 square-foot biologics manufacturing facility. Prior to joining City of Hope, Megaw worked in technology transfer for several years, both as a licensing associate with the UAB Research Foundation and, before that, as a technology manager with the Defence Diversification Agency, the then technology transfer arm of the U.K. government’s Ministry of Defence.  Prior to embarking on a career in technology transfer, Megaw completed two post-doctoral fellowships, earned a Ph.D. in virology from the University of Glasgow and a B.Sc. in biological sciences from the University of Ulster.


Matthew Grunseth, MBS

Matthew Grunseth joined the OTL as a licensing manager in June 2008.  He is responsible for evaluating invention disclosures, directing intellectual property prosecutions, negotiating collaboration and license agreements, and working with inventors and industry professionals to successfully commercialize new technologies.  Before joining the OTL, Grunseth worked in the Los Alamos National Laboratory Technology Transfer Department.  He is a certified patent agent and has earned an M.B.S. from the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences and a B.S. in cellular biology and genetics from the University of Maryland at College Park.




Ryan M. Kelly, Ph.D.

Ryan M. Kelly joined the OTL as a licensing manager in May 2010.  He is responsible for executing material transfer and confidentiality agreements, evaluating invention disclosures, negotiating collaboration and license agreements, and promoting marketing efforts to successfully commercialize new technologies.  Before joining the OTL, Kelly trained as a postdoctoral fellow at The Scripps Research Institute and interned in Scripps’ Office of Technology Development. He earned a Ph.D. in immunology from the University of Minnesota and a B.S. in biochemistry from California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo.




Calvin Chen

Calvin Chen joined the OTL as a licensing manager in June 2011.  He is responsible for executing material transfer, confidentiality and research collaboration agreements. He also helps out with marketing of City of Hope technologies to various commercial partners. Prior to joining the OTL, Chen was a member of the licensing team at the University of Southern California’s Stevens Institute for Innovation for several years.  Chen earned bachelor degrees in molecular cellular biology and psychology at the University of California at Berkeley.





Chanel Parrish

Chanel Parrish joined the OTL in November 2004. Known as the “Gate Keeper,” she conducts day-to-day operations and is responsible for developing workflow systems and procedures. Parrish is also point of contact for confidentiality agreements and involved in marketing. Prior to joining the OTL, Parrish worked in the staffing industry, specializing in legal recruiting.
