San Diego Construction Industries Alliance

Nearly 100 years ago, a volunteer group of workers and manufacturers in the garment industry gathered funds to purchase the land on which City of Hope now exists.  They were humanitarians whose legacy and vision continue to this day in the form of industry partnerships. Unique among philanthropies, these partnerships are composed of companies and supporters united by industry and the drive to advance City of Hope’s mission to bring new hope to patients everywhere.  By spearheading successful fundraising campaigns on local, regional and national levels, these groups have raised hundreds of millions of dollars to support and enhance the research, treatment and education programs that have made City of Hope a nationwide leader.

In 1981 the San Diego Construction Industries Alliance was formed to establish a legacy of giving in the San Diego community by a group of compassionate and generous industry leaders.  Through a series of fundraising events, which culminates with an annual Spirit of Life® celebration, this group has raised millions of dollars for City of Hope.

City of Hope salutes the San Diego Construction Industries Alliance for its quarter-century plus years of support. Congratulations for helping us to save countless lives and restore hopeful dreams.

2008 Spirit of Life Gala Recap

The 2008 San Diego Construction Industries Alliance Spirit of Life Gala was held on Saturday, June 21, 2008. Over 200 guests attended a black tie dinner aboard the USS Midway to honor Kent Aden & Captain Jim DiMatteo. Highlights of the evening included a special award presentation to Kent Aden by his mentor, David Kuhn. Kuhn, a prominent name in the construction industry, has known Aden for over 30 years and is currently undergoing treatment at City of Hope. Following this presentation by Kuhn, Aden and his family announced that their family trust would be bequesting $100,000 to City of Hope.

Another highlight of the evening was a touching and emotional presentation by City of Hope pediatric cancer survivor Marshall Cotta and his three brothers -- Jared, Brendan and Landis. All three brothers shared their gratitude for City of Hope saving their brother’s life, with Marshall rounding out the presentation by exclaiming that his doctor at City of Hope, Michael Jensen M.D., “is the best doctor in the whole world!”

The event raised over $200,000 for pediatric cancer treatment and research and City of Hope.
