Deborah Carver

A native of Philadelphia and the daughter of Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) organizers, Deborah Carver began her publishing career right out of high school as a cub reporter for the Jewish Exponent. After a brief foray in modeling, she drove to California in 1961. She did, however, make a short stop in Las Vegas, where the 6-footer was spotted by a talent scout who got her work as a Flamingo Hotel showgirl! Alas, feathered headdresses were not for her.

In Los Angeles, Deborah landed a job as a receptionist for Brentwood Publishing. She was promoted numerous times, and by 1970 was named associate publisher of several of their magazines, including Space Age News, through which she met many of America's first astronauts. They, in turn, inspired her to take flying lessons and obtain a pilot’s license.

In 1969, Deborah founded Creative Age Publications (CAP), focusing on innovative medical and technical magazines, such as Dialysis & Transplantation and Emergency Medical Services – the first magazine to publish Dr. Henry Heimlich's eponymous maneuver. Additional publishing firsts include Undergrounding, OPTIONS in Medical Practice, Audiology and Hearing Education, Electronic Retailing, Nutritional Support Services and Diving World—which led to a dive with world-renowned inventor and explorer Jacques Cousteau.

In a move that would ultimately redefine her company, Deborah published Nailpro in 1990. The new title quickly became the company’s leading nail magazine and is now a worldwide publication printed in five languages. Her groundbreaking Dayspa magazine debuted in 1995, followed by Beauty Store Business, Sunless, Today’s Image, Launchpad and MedEsthetics. In 2004, Deborah acquired and gave a complete makeover to INSPIRE, the salon hairstyle book for clients. Never to rest on her laurels, Deborah continues to introduce new publications to the professional beauty industry, including Surgical Aesthetics, MAN, The Colorist and Eye/Lash.

Creative Age also owns two trade shows: Nailpro Sacramento and Nailpro Pasadena. The Nailpro Competitions are world-renowned, with competitions held in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Today, the company focuses on all segments of the beauty industry: hair, skin, nails, spas, tanning, esthetics, lashes, brows, men’s grooming and sales and distribution. Creative Age Publications takes great pride in its staff, many of whom have been with CAP for more than 20 years, and have led the company to numerous honors, including 21 Maggie Awards (and the prestigious Gold Maggie for Nailpro as the Best Overall Trade Magazine), one ABBY, two Ozzies and numerous honorable mentions in various contests.

Deborah serves on the Executive Committee of the City of Hope’s annual Spirit of Life event. She contributes advertising and editorial space for AIDS and cancer charities, and numerous beauty industry causes.

She makes her home in Encino, California, with her wife Jewell Cunningham. She is a mother and grandmother, an avid yachtswoman, loves to play tennis and has three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
