Originally from the south of Japan, Ryotaro Nakamura, M.D., received his medical degree at the Kumamoto University School of Medicine, after which he performed residencies at the University Hospital and associated Iizuka Hospital. He subsequently moved to the United States to pursue a residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, and subspecialty training in hematology/oncology at National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

Thomas Slavin, M.D., trained at the University of South Florida where he earned his undergraduate degree in biology followed by his medical degree. He subsequently pursued residencies in both pediatrics (Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, University Hospitals of Cleveland) and medical genetics (Center for Human Genetics, University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University).
