Aruna Jindal: 30-year leukemia survivor and ourHope inspiration

City of Hope gave Umesh Jindal’s wife, Aruna, a second chance at life. Umesh’s desire to give back motivated him to create a personal fundraising webpage on ourHope, which raised almost $10,000 for cancer research.

The Jindals’ cancer journey began in India in 1984, when Aruna “noticed an enlarged lymph node on the side of her neck,” which turned out to be acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Initially told by doctors that she only had months to live, Aruna and her family were scared. They decided to make the journey to the U.S. in search of better treatment options.

Upon arrival in the U.S., Aruna quickly received a referral to City of Hope that would save her life. She was given the option to receive a bone marrow transplant, which at the time was considered an experimental treatment. Aruna decided to undergo treatment and is now a proud 30-year long-term survivor, and a happy, healthy grandmother.

Wanting to celebrate his wife’s incredible survival, share their story and give back to City of Hope, Umesh saw a great opportunity in ourHope, City of Hope’s online fundraising platform. On ourHope you can raise money for one of over 30 different disease areas, any City of Hope doctor or nursing education programs. Umesh created his personal fundraising page and shared Aruna’s amazing story with his family and friends; he was taken aback by the support and response that his page received.

Of his experience with ourHope, Umesh says:

“When I decided to write this story of survival one week ago, I was thinking of a goal of $2,500. Beyond all our expectations, you have helped us go past this goal in the course of one week only. We are humbled and honored to receive such an outpouring of love and support for our drive to help raise funds for cancer research at City of Hope. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
