Now, the spouse of one former City of Hope patient is giving back to the institution's nurses in a big way. So moved by the care her husband received from the City of Hope nursing staff, she created a scholarship for nurses, and nurses only. This first-of-its-kind scholarship at City of Hope will provide funding for four nurses to complete additional schooling. In October, Danette Gonzales and Judy Trujillo became the first two scholarship recipients; the other two scholarships were announced during City of Hope’s recent celebration of National Nurses Appreciation Week. The winners: Lauryn Elffers and Christina Gibson.
“To recognize that there was a family so pleased with their care that they wanted to donate, that speaks highly of City of Hope,” Elffers said. All the recipients hope that the opportunity to expand their base of knowledge will offer them the additional means to provide the very best in care for patients and their families. The donor hopes that this scholarship will serve as an example to other potential donors and that the scholarship will highlight just how important nurses are in the care of patients and families.
