March 11, 2013
DUARTE, Calif. —  Health-care management expert and physician Harlan Levine, M.D., has joined City of Hope as chief executive of City of Hope Medical Foundation, a sister organization to City of Hope and Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope. A former executive vice president at WellPoint Inc., overseeing Comprehensive Health Solutions, Levine will lead the medical foundation in its mission to care for, and provide services to, City of Hope patients.

“Harlan has a proven ability to collaborate across the health-care continuum,” said City of Hope President Robert Stone. “His skills in delivering innovative solutions to complex problems will help City of Hope improve the patient experience, form new partnerships and continue to build our enterprise amid a challenging health-care environment.”

At Comprehensive Health Solutions, Levine was responsible for medical cost and quality management for one of the nation’s leading health plans. During his tenure, his focus on strategies for profitable growth and improving the delivery of health care drove him to lead the design and launch of  the health system’s most comprehensive value-based reimbursement initiative.

Prior to WellPoint, Levine served in roles of increasing clinical management responsibility, including chief medical officer of United Health Group’s Optum Health Care Solutions, based in Minneapolis; the national practice leader for Towers Watson’s health management practice; regional medical director of PacifiCare of California, based in Los Angeles; and chief medical officer and executive vice president for Adesso Health Care Technologies, based in San Jose, Calif. He also served as president and chief executive officer of Logic Health Systems, a division of Salick Health Care/AstraZeneca, based in Los Angeles.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and licensed by the Medical Board of California, Levine has held appointments on IBM’s Watson Healthcare Board of Advisors and the Patient Centered Primary Care Collaborative Board of Directors.

In Levine’s new role, he will oversee the ambulatory practice on City of Hope’s main campus and at all community clinics and will work with the president and executive leadership to strategically position City of Hope. He also will be a member of City of Hope’s organization-wide executive team.
