Sam Talbot

Sam Talbot (moderator) is a chef, author, philanthropist and television personality based in both Brooklyn and Los Angeles. Diagnosed at a young age with Type 1 Diabetes, Sam lives every hour with a deep understanding of the impact of food on life and life on food. Among the ventures closest his heart is Beyond Type 1, a non-profit organization focusing on inspiring the diabetic community, which he cofounded with musician Nick Jonas.


Bart Roep, Ph.D.

Bart O. Roep, Ph.D., is Chan Soon-Shiong Shapiro Distinguished Chair in Diabetes and the founding chair of the Department of Diabetes Immunology at City of Hope. He is an internationally recognized authority and key opinion leader on multiple aspects of type 1 diabetes, with particular interest in understanding the cause of the disease and translating this knowledge into immune intervention strategies (including gene therapy, stem cell therapy and bone marrow transportation) with the ultimate goal to cure type 1 diabetes.

Debbie Thurmond, Ph.D.

Debbie Thurmond, Ph.D., is a renowned research scientist and deputy director of City of Hope's Diabetes & Metabolism Research Institute. She serves as professor and founding chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology. Dr. Thurmond and her team leads efforts to identify cellular and molecular mechanisms in diabetes development and therapies that can stop or reverse those processes.

Amy Tenderich

Amy is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of, a leading online information destination for people with diabetes that she launched after her diagnosis with Type 1 diabetes in 2003. As of January 2015, DiabetesMine became part of San Francisco-based Healthline Media, where Amy now also serves as Editorial Director, Diabetes & Patient Advocacy. Amy also runs a series of events fostering innovation in diabetes technology and digital health tools.

Rae Sanchini Tobey

Rae Sanchini Tobey
Rae Sanchini is on the board of directors of the Los Angeles chapter of JDRF. In addition to being an active leader in the diabetes community, she is the mother of a child with diabetes. Sanchini works as a film and television producer. She received producer’s credits on such films as Titanic, True Lies and Solaris, as well as the TV series Dark Angel.

Rebekah Hata 

Rebekah Hata
Bekah Hata (online moderator) is a passionate advocate and founder of T1D Mod Squad. She has 2 children who have both battled serious medical conditions and are now thriving. Bekah and her family live in Southern California where they enjoy their four dogs and all the adventures that come along with them. Bekah is a licensed aesthetician with a growing practice she loves.

Ana Reinhardt

Ana Reinhard
Ana Reinhardt (online moderator) joined T1D Mod Squad after her youngest son was diagnosed. Besides being passionate about giving support to fellow T1D Mods and Dods, Ana helps manage T1D Mod Squad, Inc. nonprofit.  Ana enjoys taking the lead role in organizing educational events throughout the US including organizing annual educational symposiums, Mod meet ups, and 504 review sessions.

Ava Hata

Ava Hata
Ava Hata is a child advocate for T1D Mod Squad and TattleTails Scent Dogs. She was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes at 18 months old and is 14 years old now. She is passionate about advocacy and through her journey has used that passion to reach others who need guidance through the training of diabetic alert dogs.
