Advisory Committee and Mentors

The K12 Advisory Committee is the central policy and decision-making body of City of Hope’s K12 Program.  This leadership team selects new K12 Scholars, oversees their academic progress, and provides input on curriculum.  The K12 Advisory Committee is currently composed of Joanne Mortimer, MD (Principal Investigator and Program Director); Behnam Badie, MD; Rowan Chlebowski, MD, PhD; Lauren Kewley, MPH, MSW (Curriculum Director and Program Coordinator); Mark LaBarge, PhD; Matthew Loscalzo, LCSW; Susan Neuhausen, PhD; Edward Newman, PhD; Tim O’Connor, PhD; and Tim Synold, PharmD.

Developing a successful cancer research career requires strong relationships with mentors and a research team.  City of Hope’s K12 Program is highly multidisciplinary with scholars benefitting from the expertise of mentors across a number of clinical, translational, and basic science disciplines.  Every scientist and clinician involved in the K12 Program has a strong interest in teaching and is experienced in providing postdoctoral scientific education.  Each K12 Scholar selects both a clinical and a laboratory mentor upon entrance into the K12 Program.  These mentors are directly responsible for the day-to-day activities and progress of each K12 Scholar’s research program, evaluating his or her progress, and serving as role models.
