Career Advising
Career counseling is an interactive process in which a student works with a career counselor to define himself or herself and take steps toward finding a fulfilling career. Typically, the career counseling process begins with understanding a student’s interests and background and how they relate to possible career choices. It then proceeds to preparing the student for a job search with a proper résumé and interview skills, and finally to negotiating a job offer. The career counselor provides support and encouragement as students make decisions about their professional lives.
Why is Career Counseling Important?
Many graduate students and postdocs, having lived in the academic world for many years, are quite comfortable there. However, making the transition from student to professional scientist can at times feel daunting. That’s why we encourage City of Hope graduate students to meet with our career counselor. The counselor can help students discover and refine their career interests and set defined goals along the path to achieving their ideal position. Our career counselor can also help students with their résumés/CVs and can give them insight into the job interview process.

Individual, confidential, career counseling is available for graduate students only every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month. Angela Cossey is currently the Director of Career Services at Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) and brings 15 years of professional experience in human resources and education to the Irell & Manella Graduate School of Biological Sciences. She will be available to meet one-on-one with students on topics ranging from CV and résumé development, personal brand management, interviewing, networking and the job search process (academic and corporate).
