“I love working with women; they’re amazing people. They get a diagnosis that is, at times, potentially fatal, and manage to get through it while still taking care of their families and kids, coming out the other side as stronger people.”

A vital member of the City of Hope team since 2007, Joanne Mortimer, M.D., is the Baum Family Professor in Women’s Cancers, vice chair and professor of the Department of  Medical Oncology and Therapeutic Research and co-director of the Breast Cancer Program.

Dr. Mortimer received her medical degree from Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine and has over 3 decades' experience in medical oncology. It was her oncology rotation at Loyola that inspired her to focus on battling cancer.

“The patients were the most remarkable, inspirational people,” she recalled. “Every one of them was a heroic person who faced this unexpected adversity and made something positive out of it.”

Listed numerous times as one of America’s Top Doctors by Castle Connolly, Dr. Mortimer takes a special interest in examining how hormones affect normal and tumor cells. As Director of the Women's Cancer Program, she brings together scientists from across disciplines who aim to prevent cancer, develop better treatments and help survivors live full, healthy lives.
