Empowering Women in Medicine
Despite City of Hope's leadership in diversity and commitment to innovation without qualifiers, a major gender gap persists in surgery around the world. While there are now a handful of women heading up surgical departments in the U.S. and Canada, we still have a long way to go. Women hold a record number of spots as surgical chairs nationwide but that represents only about 10% of chairs of surgery in the U.S. There is also a wide difference in salary and compensation between men and women. City of Hope wants to close this gap for the future of our surgical oncology team and its patients.
A team of leading female surgeons at City of Hope have been charged with formulating a program to address the knowledge gaps and outline a curriculum to provide all female surgeons at City of Hope with leadership skills and tools for advancement in their field.
