After a remarkable 43 years of dedicated service with The Save Mart Companies (TSMC), Steve Junqueiro retired on June 1. As he steps away from his day-to-day role as chief operating officer, Junqueiro will remain actively involved in the company by maintaining his position on The Save Mart Companies board of directors and joining The Save Mart Companies C.A.R.E.S. Foundation board of directors. In his role as COO, he was responsible for overseeing the company’s supply chain, store operations, merchandising, labor relations, human resources, and organizational effectiveness and engagement functions.
Junqueiro is passionate about the grocery business. During the 43 years of service to TSMC, he rose through the ranks holding operations and merchandising positions ranging from produce clerk, produce manager, produce merchandiser, produce operations supervisor, director of Produce & Floral and vice president of Operations. To oversee the huge acquisition in 2007, Junqueiro became executive vice president. He was promoted to president and chief operating officer in early 2008 and held the role of president until March 2014 when he then co-shared this role and remained the COO. Junqueiro’s leadership has built an operational team that works with conviction, credibility and compassion.
Throughout his career, Junqueiro has served and held leadership positions on many industry and charitable boards including chairman of the board of the Produce Marketing Association, Produce for Better Health Foundation Board of Directors and was the 1998 PMA Convention chairman. He served on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fruit and Vegetable Industry Advisory Committee for two terms and was an expert speaker at an international level, assisting the USDA Foreign Agriculture Service in projects to Bangkok, Thailand, and Manila, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and India. Steve is past chairman and president of the Western Association of Food Chains. In 2011, he was inducted into the California Grocers Association Educational Foundation Hall of Achievement. He has served on City of Hope’s Board of Directors as president, the board of directors of the Boy Scouts, and the Advisory Council for the College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences for Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
