Adopt-a-Family is an annual outreach event sponsored by City of Hope. Participating departments are given a “wish list” for an individual patient and their family, and have the opportunity to purchase gifts to spread well wishes for the holidays for families who are having a harder season than most.
This year, our adopted family was a family of four: an adult male patient, his girlfriend and his two young children. Thanks to everyone’s generous donations, we collected over 20 gifts, as well as $445 which we used to purchase gift cards and additional presents for the family. We had a wrapping party on December 13 and delivered the gifts to the social worker on December 19, just in time for Christmas. Being able to brighten the holidays for this family was a rewarding experience, and we are grateful to the students, faculty and postdocs who helped make it possible.
The Outreach Committee 2019-2020 is headed by Christiana Crook and Heather Zook, both of whom are third year graduate students in the lab of Teresa Ku, Ph.D. The purpose of the Outreach Committee is to organize volunteer community-based events to promote student involvement within City of Hope and in the local community. For more information on upcoming events and how to get involved, reach out to us by email or meet with us at any Graduate Student Organization meeting.
