Immunotherapy 101 with scientist Steve Spangler (w/video)

Immunotherapy is no longer a treatment of the future. At City of Hope, researchers are using immunotherapy as an approach to treat and cure devastating illnesses.
Last month, we hosted a special pop-up event, in partnership with Cal-HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) and Emmy-nominated actress Mayim Bialik of CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory,” to showcase our commitment to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). The Hope Experiment included demonstrations to teach students how innovative research can lead to scientific miracles, and included hands-on interactive activities and the opportunity to speak with City of Hope scientists about cancer research being pioneered at City of Hope.
City of Hope is at the forefront of a specific kind of immunotherapy, known as CAR-T cell therapy, in which a patient’s immune system is reprogrammed to recognize and destroy their cancer tumors. To help promote the Hope Experiment and bring this groundbreaking research to life, we called on YouTube sensation Steve Spangler of Sick! Science to create a brief video on ways to outsmart cancer cells using immunotherapy.
Believe it or not, slime is a great way to visualize and better understand the science of immunotherapy! Use slime to represent the body’s immune system and a magnet to represent cancer. Adding iron oxide to slime activates the slime to attack and engulf magnets, in the same way immunotherapy activates the immune system to target cancer cells.
