Blood and platelets go to the blood bank for processing and samples are sent out for infectious disease testing. The products are then labeled, stored and transfused when needed.

Screening tests for donated blood and platelets include:

  • Antibodies to Hepatitis C virus
  • Antibodies to Hepatitis B core/ surface
  • Antibodies to Human T-Lymphotropic
  • Antibodies to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Types 1&2
  • Syphilis
  • NAT testing
  • West Nile Virus
  • Bacteria testing for platelets
In most circumstances, platelet donations do not need be the same blood type.
While the patients at City of Hope have an underlying diagnosis related to cancer, each resident will gain a comprehensive scope of pharmacy practice.
The residency was first accredited May 14, 1984.
City of Hope is a teaching institution that trains medical fellows and residents in Oncology, Hematology, Surgery, and Radiation Oncology.
City of Hope has teaching agreements with local pharmacy schools including USC, Loma Linda, UCSF, and Western.
The pharmacy department provides inpatient and ambulatory care services.
Clinical pharmacists participate in multidisciplinary rounds and various operational duties.
Many of the former residents are still employed at City of Hope.
