John J. Park, M.D., Ph.D., is the Chief of the Division of Interventional Radiology,which was established at City of Hope in 2011. Over the years he has built the Division into a nationally-recognized program centered around a culture of high-quality patient care, clinical excellence and forward-minded research.

As a Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Interventional Radiologist, Dr. Park is interested in the treatment of diseases using minimally-invasive, image-guided techniques. This includes the development of clinical practices and the implementation of novel treatment paradigms for both vascular and oncologic diseases. As a physician-scientist, Dr. Park is also interested in understanding disease states. He is actively focused on conducting translation research that will ultimately help in better understanding and treating cancer and related conditions through the development of new technologies and targeted therapies.

As a Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Interventional Radiologist, Dr. Park is interested in the treatment of diseases using minimally-invasive, image-guided techniques. Dr. Park received his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Berkeley, his medical and doctorate degrees from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and completed his radiology residency and interventional radiology fellowship training at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center.

Contributions to Science

1. Investigating ablative technologies in the treatment of cancer. Specifically, Dr. Park is interested in developing and evaluating innovations in minimally-invasive tumor targeting and treatments utilizing novel delivery and treatment monitoring platforms, such as tele-navigation, robotics, and fusion imaging. Through collaborations with both clinical and industry partners, Dr. Park has engaged in prospective and retrospective studies focused on improving technical and clinical outcomes during percutaneous image-guided oncologic interventions.

2. Treating liver tumors utilizing transcatheter based therapies. Intrahepatic progression of liver tumors is a challenging process to treat and is associated with poor prognosis when present. In multidisciplinary collaborative efforts, Dr. Park is working with his oncologic colleagues in better understanding and developing rationale combination approaches in treating liver cancers by incorporating multiple combined platforms. Dr. Park has been highly involved in both investigator initiated and multi-center randomized control trials in evaluating the use of transcatheter based liver-directed therapies along with surgical interventions and/or systemic therapies.

3. Improving embolization techniques for the treatment of vascular and non-vascular disorders. Dr. Park is interested in developing therapeutic (embolic and non-embolic) platforms for the treatment of various disorders. As therapeutic devices continue to evolve, identifying how these devices can be utilized in novel applications is important in establishing best practices for treating challenging disorders. Dr. Park has ongoing collaborations with academic and industry partners in developing, evaluating and improving various therapeutic platforms, including bland embolization devices, drug eluting devices, and other non-traditional platforms. By using direct tissue targeting techniques like percutaneous needle injection or trans-catheter delivery of an embolic and/or therapeutic payload, more selective, and possibly more effective, treatments can be achieved.
