The interventional oncology team at City of Hope® Cancer Center Chicago offers patients in the Illinois and Wisconsin areas access to a wide range of advanced, minimally invasive techniques that can help diagnose and treat cancer, as well as relieve its side effects. Our interventional oncologists are experts in a variety of image-guided procedures designed to make treatment more effective, improve quality of life during treatment and reduce the need for more invasive treatment options.
Interventional Pulmonology
Our interventional pulmonologists are highly trained at performing procedures that help patients with cancers of the lung, trachea or other parts of the respiratory system. They may also treat conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or emphysema.
In most cases, these techniques use minimally invasive tools such as a bronchoscope or pleuroscope to:
- Help patients breathe more easily
- Clear obstructions or remove fluid from the lungs
- Place fiducial markers, which make it easier to target a tumor with certain treatments
- Remove cancerous or pre-cancerous lesions
- Complete a biopsy of a tumor
Interventional Radiology
Interventional radiologists specialize in using image-guided techniques to treat cancer and related health issues. These procedures are less invasive and can help reduce recovery times, promote more effective treatment and manage the side effects of cancer. At City of Hope Chicago, we offer interventional radiology treatments that include:
- Tumor ablations, which use extreme heat or cold to destroy tumors
- Vascular procedures to help manage blood flow to a tumor or other parts of the body
- Targeted liver cancer therapies
- Placements of stents, ports, catheters and drains
- Pain management for bones and joints
Gastroenterology
Our Chicago gastroenterology team diagnoses and treats cancers that affect the digestive system, including colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer and stomach cancer, as well as pancreatic cancer and liver cancer. Interventional gastroenterological procedures – i.e., colonoscopy, endoscopy and enteroscopy – can help stage, diagnose and even treat some of these cancer types.
Interventional Pain Management
Pain management specialists at City of Hope Chicago help patients manage the side effects of cancer and its treatment, using minimally invasive techniques to offer pain relief and improve quality of life. Every patient’s cancer diagnosis and treatment plan are different, but some common interventional pain management options available include:
- Prescription medications
- Implanted pain pumps
- Nerve-blocking therapies
In some cases, your pain management physician may recommend one of these options before, during or after a particular treatment.
