The peritoneum is the membrane of tissue that lines the inside of the abdomen. Peritoneal malignancies are tumors in the peritoneum that may or may not have spread to lymph nodes or organs, such as the spleen or liver. These tumors may start in the appendix, colon, rectum, stomach, ovaries and other organs and then spread to the peritoneum.

The Peritoneal Surface Malignancies Program at City of Hope® Cancer Center Chicago offers personalized treatment to patients with advanced cancer in the abdomen, including peritoneal surface malignancies.

What Sets Our Illinois Peritoneal Cancer Program Apart?

At City of Hope Chicago Cancer Center, patients with peritoneal surface malignancies are treated by a multidisciplinary team of clinicians that may include surgical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists.

Patients may also be seen by supportive care providers, such as pain management specialists and nutritional support providers, who help patients manage symptoms and side effects and return to daily activities as quickly as possible.

Surgeons at the City of Hope Chicago Cancer Center Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Program are experienced in performing the procedures listed below, and more.

Cytoreductive surgery: This procedure is intended to remove visible tumors in the abdomen.

Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC): Performed by a board-certified surgical oncologist, this procedure delivers a heated, sterilized chemotherapy solution directly to the abdomen immediately following cytoreductive surgery. Unlike traditional chemotherapy delivery, HIPEC uses a heated chemotherapy solution intended to enhance the effects of the drugs and improve absorption by tumor cells. HIPEC also allows for higher doses of treatment and is designed to reduce systemic exposure to chemotherapy and reduce side effects. In combination, cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC may be a treatment option for patients with advanced surface spread of cancer in the abdomen. In addition to treating peritoneal surface malignancies, these therapies may also treat:
