Joining Forces Against Blood Cancers
Together, we have created the largest bone marrow and stem cell transplant program in the United States, developing a comprehensive, patient-centered model of cancer care that’s delivering advanced treatments to even more patients, with the sense of urgency they deserve.
Your Treatment Options
Hematologic malignancies differ from other types of cancer because they develop in the body's blood cells and may not form tumors. Treatment for blood cancer depends on many factors, including the type of cancer you have, your age, how fast your cancer is progressing and whether and where the cancer has spread.
Your hematologic oncologist will work with you to develop a comprehensive treatment plan designed specifically for your type of cancer.
Stem Cell Transplants
Blood cancers may damage blood cells in the lymph system and bone marrow, making it difficult for the body to produce new and healthy cells. As the damaged blood cells divide, they crowd out healthy cells, produce a variety of symptoms, such as fatigue, joint pain and fever, and may damage the immune system.
To help patients with blood cancers produce new, normal cells, our doctors may recommend a stem cell transplant as part of the treatment plan. Stem cells, immature cells found in bone marrow and blood, develop into different types of cells, including blood cells. A stem cell transplant infuses healthy stem cells into the body to stimulate new bone marrow growth, suppress the disease and reduce the possibility of a recurrence. Stem cells are collected from circulating blood, also called peripheral blood.
At City of Hope Phoenix, your stem cell transplant will be managed by a board-certified hematologic oncologist. You will receive around-the-clock monitoring and care by a team of clinicians dedicated to making sure you and your family are comfortable throughout your treatment.
