Now’s your chance to give back: participate in Take It Personal

May 13, 2016 | by City of Hope

While she was undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukemia, Rhonda Latkovic heard about ourHope, City of Hope’s online personal fundraising tool.

Still in the middle of her battle with cancer, Rhonda was already so grateful for the incredible treatment and care she was receiving at City of Hope. So she decided to give back by creating a page on ourHope and raising money for her doctor’s leukemia research. She worked on her page a little bit each day, using it as a distraction from her treatments.

During last year’s Take it Personal campaign — an annual opportunity to raise money on ourHope and double your impact — Rhonda set a goal of raising $500. But she reached her goal in just two days and ultimately raised more than $7,000!

It’s time for Take It Personal once again — which means all funds raised on ourHope from May 1 to June 30 will be doubled, up to $100,000, thanks to the generous matching gift from grateful patient Toni Stephenson and her husband, Emmet.

Rhonda is participating in Take It Personal again this year, and you can join her! Every dollar you raise will go twice as far, and you can choose to direct your finds to the cause closest to your heart. There are more than 30 different causes to choose from — including leukemia, breast cancer, diabetes and more.

Setting up your ourHope page is easy. Simply choose one of ourHope’s six different fundraising page themes — such as raising money before an upcoming race or asking for donations in lieu of birthday gifts. Then, personalize your page with photos, video and your story, and share it with family and friends on social media and through email.

“I wanted to give back to City of Hope because I believe in what they’re doing,” Rhonda says. “And I just hope that a small part of what I do can someday help bring an end to cancer.”

In addition to doubling the impact of your fundraising efforts on ourHope from May 1 through June 30, you can earn a plaque in City of Hope’s Rose Garden if you raise at least $2,500, just like Rhonda.

The Rose Garden was a very special place for Rhonda during her time at City of Hope. On a recent visit, she saw her plaque for the first time. “It was a very special day,” she says.
