IMRT is an advanced mode of high-precision radiotherapy to deliver precise radiation doses to a malignant tumor or specific areas within the tumor. IMRT also allows higher radiation doses to be focused on the tumor while minimizing the dose to surrounding normal critical structures.

HDR involves the internal delivery of high-dose radiation in or near the tumor through a surgical procedure or insertion. Applying higher doses of radiation for a shorter period (a few minutes) can be more effective in treating some cancers while minimizing the duration of exposure for nearby normal tissues — reducing the likelihood and severity of side effects.
TrueBeam radiotherapy system provides a variety of treatment techniques, such as respiration-synchronized MV/kV radiographs, 4D CBCT, Iterative CBCT, triggered-imaging, to address a broad range of cancer cases. Technology integration enables clinicians to treat a wider array of cancer cases using a diverse range of radiation therapies.
The radiation oncology team at City of Hope Orange County is at the forefront of improving patient care, and our staff is constantly studying new technologies and treatment methods that can lead to better outcomes and quality of life.
City of Hope’s 4D CT technology can significantly enhance cancer treatment by capturing not only the tumor’s location but also its movement within the body. This is particularly useful for treating lung cancer, where the tumor is in constant movement as the patient breathes.
By capturing both location and movement, 4D CT allows our treatment team to better plan a regimen to accurately account for tumor or organ motion, such as programming the radiation beams to adjust in coordination with patient and tumor movement.
Ethos therapy redefines personalized cancer care through an Adaptive Intelligence™ solution, which is an AI-based solution that predicts daily anatomy and optimizes the radiation doses accordingly. It integrates iterative CBCT and multimodality diagnostic quality images on the treatment console at the point of treatment. By providing the most current view of the patient’s anatomy in exquisite detail, Ethos therapy gives clinicians the confidence they require for adapting plans that are based on high-quality imaging.
MRI is often the imaging modality of choice. The MR Linac merges two technologies — an MRI scanner to precisely locate tumors that are often composed of soft tissue and a state-of-the-art linear accelerator for treatment delivery. This dual-action system allows for near real-time, on-table adaptive radiation therapy to adjust the radiation beams based on the daily anatomy, giving our physicians much greater control over the delivery of radiation.

An active listener, he aims to understand what is truly on a patient’s mind.
Radiation oncologist Amanda Schwer, M.D. knew she wanted to be a cancer doctor for as long as she can remember, inspired by the doctors who cured a sibling who faced aggressive disease in early childhood. Her treatment approach is very much in line with City of Hope’s tradition of compassion: Quite simply, the patient always comes first. As a third-generation Orange County native, Dr. Schwer is proud to play a part in bringing extraordinary cancer care to the community that is so close to her heart.
